Government Official States Ministry of Defence Investigating Security Risk from Chinese Cars, with Staff Advised to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Cars.

A defense official has stated that the MoD is currently looking into the potential security risks associated with Chinese-made vehicles, and staff have been instructed to refrain from discussing secret matters in any cars.

Safety Advice for MoD Personnel

During a recent interview on LBC, a defence minister commented on claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to talk about secret material while riding in Chinese vehicles.

The minister explained that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that security is a concern in every modern vehicles.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a very small number.
But whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their car, to avoid having discussions at a classified classification in any kind of car, because of the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for everyone worried about security.

After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using all Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: That is precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”

Wider Security Background

The revelation follows claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable China to switch off buses and cause chaos to public transit.

Additionally, a Russian spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.

The broader defence environment underscores the significance of robust measures and caution in every aspects of government activities, from transport usage to discussions practices.
